A major benefit to cruise travel is going to a formal dinner and enjoying the wonderful food, atmosphere and friends, new and old. Going in jeans is for the local sports bar. And after sailing on the Princess Cruises Lines Grand Princess, I am all in favor of formal nights, and against smart casual. Smart casual on Princess, part of the Carnival Cruises Lines family, means no ripped jeans and not much else.

Celebrity Cruises is keeping things a step higher with their policies on dressing for dinner.

One of the biggest changes to dining with Celebrity has nothing to do with food. For long-time cruisers like Anna and I and yourself, who truly appreciate the ambience of life onboard an ocean-going vessel, Celebrity Cruises is reviving one of cruising’s most romantic traditions beginning on August 1, 2008—formal dining. With up to three formal evenings on each cruise, you can celebrate in the style
and warmth of our exceptional service. Even those nights not designated as “formal” will include a certain elegance, as we
phase out informal dress in our main dining rooms and spec ialty restaurants, replacing it with “Smart Casual and Above,” a guideline that will add to the sophistication of each night out.

Ladies time to go shopping. And bring alone your man so he can know what accessories to get for his tux and white dinner jacket to make the night all the more elegant. And don’t rent a tuxedo - go out and buy one. A classic style never goes out of style. And the accessories for your french cuffs, vest and tie always add to your look and her beautfiul dress or gown.

Of course, those who’d rather not dress for dinner, are more than welcome to come and enjoy the expanded menus in the many casual dining options onboard each ship, where you’ll find everything from pizza to sushi. Really, can anyone go on a cruise and say that they did not get enough to eat? You might not like the 4 choices on the main menu, but there is always a huge selection and a staff friendly and listening - just ask.
