The story of Drizzt and his companions continues in this ongoing epic. The underdark is on the march to war with the surface. What a different turn of events after the escape of Drizzt and Catti-brie from the Underdark.  Now he must defend his new homeland, in a continuation of the events in the previous 2 books in this epic saga.

The first part of the story details the prelude to what will unfold in the next few books - The Time of Troubles. While a story into itself, we see the pieces that add depth to the world of The Forgetten realms. And in true ongoing fashion, we hear about this Time for the next few books in subtle bringing together of the threads into a great epic adventure not only urging you to read the next chapter but looking for the next book in the series.

I am a fan of events that come together - they add depth to the world and help to bring us in. Far too many authors just reference things with one line. That minimal effect is weak and creates a single dimension world that does not exist past our current character. R.A. Salvator and George R.R. Martin both do the right thing and build an ongoing world of color, commentary and depth.
And at the same time, we have a build up to the battle. Not just any battle but a war of the Underdark as they lay siege to Mithril Hall. Once again, R.A. Salvatore gives us a battle that is composed of many individuals, events, encounters and physical situations that bring us a war worthy of reading - we want to be there with the squad tactics and the leaders as they give commands to turn the tides to their favour.

In great style, unlike the opening 5 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, we get a battle and we asle get light adventure in the battleraging dwarf Pwent, and his newly trained squad. And an ongoing appearane by the light harted wizards, the Harpell’s. The add to the depth of story, make us laugh, ease the tension of the war, and keep us reading.

Siege of Darkness: The Legend of Drizzt, Book IX written in fine flair and his ongoing style with depth of characters, R.A. Salvatore.
