FREE custom ringtones for iPhones
Want to put your favorite tunes on your iPhone as a ringtone? Don’t want to pay $0.99, $1.99, $2.99 for a ringtone? Don’t want to give some nonesense website your name, email and answer 50 surveys? Then this is for you.
Take your favorite music file, and edit it down to just the portion you want as your ring tone. Then in iTunes, Import the file to iTunes File -> Import
Now you can right click in the Library and see it says Convert to Ringtone, but that will get you the warning message that you can only convert files purchased from iTunes. Nice of Apple to let you do what you want with your own phone you paid hundreds of dollars for.
Right about that you will see the Convert To ACC. Convert the file. Next go into your file and change the file extension, the 3 letters after the period from .m4a to .m5r. Double click on the file and iTunes will launch and put the file into your Ringtone folder and play the ringtone.
Note - ringtones should be small, so be sure to keep the file small in size and length. Expect problems if the file is too long, if it plays at all or locks up your iPhone.
Now SYNC your iPhone and you all are done - you have any music file you want as a ringtone on your iPhone without forking over money to Apple, AT&T, or any of those ring tones for free after you pay $9.95 a month websites

And just for the record, this does not require any lame shell access to your iPhone, it is all done on your PC. Oh, what software to use to edit the .MP3 or other music file you have a legal right to use? I recommend Audacity. I have been using it for music editing and Podcast creation for a long time and can recommend it strongly. And it is free - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
