Start the New Year helping others
I have donated software to schools and charities for years. I did this because I wanted to help and because work gave me an opportunity to have the company match my donation with company products. The charities and schools got what they needed and some in cases stuff they never even thought about because it was not were in their budget to even consider. I was always glad when the charity or school did a press release on the donations and gets its name out to the public. It showed them and all that they do, and also showed not what I or my employer did, but showed others what they could do with their employers.
That being said – software is one piece. Don’t forget about your time, be it as a set of hands, doing anything, or in our industry. We did a project in Ft. Lauderdale for Volunteer Broward were I set up the Small Business Server in the office and did training for the staff on software. And a group of us participating in the scope, design, development and training for a key piece of software to automate on of their core functions. It turned into an opportunity for me to sit with a laptop at Florida Panthers game. I suggested at the kick off meeting that we take the laptop and a folding table and work at the games to recruit. Little did I know the owners and management were in the audience.
And think it up a notch. Are you not a developer? Bring it to the IS developers were you work, friends, or on the Internet. Be the facilitator to find others help you do good for your local charity or school. We can all toss in our talents and do some amazing things. And that’s how I roll!
