One of my posts had over 1400 comments, another had over 1,000 comments. What were these posts about? Specifically a cartoon or piece of anime on television. Avatar: The Last Airbender. I am 100% in favor of comments. I love getting them, reading them, and when appropriate replying to them in the comments or in a new post or page, here or on other sites.

As this blog continues to grow and this and other projects rise and fall, rise again and grow on their own or without my help, I expect the number of comments here to increase as well. While moderating the current level on most posts which ranges from zero to a few dozen comments is not a hassle, this is a good time to put down a few suggestions and requests from me to you. So here we have a simple, official and yet lightweight comment policy.

  • First and foremost, if your comment is not providing anything of value, it will likely be deleted. Geek speak r0xx0rs go right away. Other comments such as “Nice!” or “Great post” are simply not necessary and don’t improve the conversation in any way. They let you be heard, but they don’t add to the overall value of the reader that comes after you. This one rule takes care of most issues.
  • No comment signature links. Make an account and include your profile information.
  • This is a family site, and while I hate not being able to go blue, it does not add to the overall value. Any comments that link to adult sites or sites with questionable content will be deleted. This includes any site I determine to be spam. I realize any links placed in comments are never followed but I and the rest of the web have to suffer the manual and macro asshats that put out spam. I value my own time and yours. The spammers do not value either. I don’t want them wasting our time on useless or trashy sites.
  • I cannot read or write anything but English. And sometimes that is not done very good. Or is it very well? Until I learn a new language, all non-English comments or site links will be deleted.

And there we have our lightweight comment policy. It can change at any time, but being simple and flexible, it has worked for me for a few years without being spelled out. This is just a small piece of housekeeping for me to work on.

Thank you for reading and commenting. Thank you very much.
Jim
