AOL lets 2,000 workers go?
AOL just announced they are letting go another 1/5 of their work force. How does AOL have so many thousands of workers at all, let alone so many that they can let go 2,000 workers? With the expansion of DSL and Cable, their market share has to be plummeting every day. 6 years ago we saw the real growth phase of broadband Internet access. And nothing has changed or improved in the dial up industry where AOL started out. And yet some people with too much money invested in them enough for them to purchase and then drag down a media empire with a much longer history of not being a flash in the pan.
I do not know anyone who has used AOL for years. In fact, I have not heard anyone mention AOL in any manner for years. They are an aging elephant on its way to the burial grounds. And apparently the employees don’t know this. If I had a friend who worked at AOL, I would have told them to jump ship 6 years ago, or at least start actively looking. One can only assume that those 2,000 being let go are contractors, customer service reps and other hourly workers. And those people will usually get nothing with their final check except if lucky a thank you form letter for their service.
Now those let go should have looked for worked when they could. I would think it is more difficult to look for work when 1,999 other people just like are looking also. And no excuse of paycheck to paycheck makes up for being prepared and looking forward. Of course, the holiday season is here, so there are plenty of seasonal jobs at retail stores.
