The Navigator power steering failed and a battery indicator idiot light came on while driving on the PA Turnpike. I pulled over right at Exit 44 where I happen to be on the North East extension. Called Holman Lincoln Mercury and Joe said “your belt slipped” That’s fast diagnostics.

A call to AAA, and they passed me to the turnpike who sent out a tow truck. We had a nice chat over to the dealership about his job, growing up in the Lehigh Valley area, and his looking into getting a CDL. I suggested he look at unemployment and job service. Years ago that was the way to get a CDL. Get laid off or fired, and when on unemployment, they want to help you get a job. One way is through training. A CDL is a ticket to long term work in any economy.

I attended the conference call from my cell phone - another win for the Verizn Wireless 6700 and Microsoft smartphones and PDA’s - a complete mobile office. I know, I’ve sat and used it as one a few times.

Joe’s over the phone diagnostics were dead on. When the Navigator was on the truck, I saw the belt shredded and hanging on the ground. Total repairs this trip:

  • Replace serpentine belt, and luckily when it broke it sliced through a coolant hose and sprayed coolant all over. So replace serpentine belt, repair coolant hose, new coolant - $334.36
  • Lube, oil and filter - 7 quarts - $39.75
  • Rotate tires - oh front brake pads low. So rotate tires and replace front brake pads - $167.90
  • Check transmission fluid - $0.00
  • Total repair bill including taxes - $579.95
