The Tree - part II

My wife tells me she comes home from dropping the oldest at school and there are two trucks, which after questioning her we find out are a bucket truck and a cherry picker. I mean, is it too hard for to know the names and descriptions of lifts? This is after all important man stuff to know.

The middle one wants to stand outside and watch them work. Now a 5 year old and tree removal probably do not mix, so she said no and sent her inside. Creative as she is, and I am very proud of her, she props a chair in front of the door and watches out screen window. After an hour, she runs downstairs, comes back up, and in the short time, the tree went from being pruned to stumps all cut down.

She was livid, screaming at her mom that “They cut down my favorite tree” and “Why didn’t you tell them to stop?”, and lastly “Why did they do that?” with her usual emotional excitement.

Rick shows up to do the clean-up, so the middle one tells her he is there. My wife makes bag lunches of hot dogs and such and lets the 5 year old carry them outside. Her big day :)

I come home and pick up a MacDonald’s Kids Meal with a girl toy, diet coke and for the older baby, a Shamrock shake. The house looks very different without the tree. Very different. The stump will be gone soon, but the house does look different.

I call the 5 year old, ask her what happened to the tree, then give her a hug, kiss and the Happy Meal. She liked the Happy Meal better, but I will remember the hug and kiss longer then she will :)

The oldest one gets the shamrock shake - the traditional drink of her people apparently from her giddy reaction.
