I need a new cell phone

My current phone needs to be replaced. Driving in the other day the rest of the team on the con call told me to get a new phone or wake up earlier to be on a landline for the call next week. So I really cannot put this off anymore, I want to order something today.

I need a phone and I need to be able to get access not just to the Internet, but back into the networks at work, which need be to authenticate with a smart card. So this means hooking the phone up to my laptop as a modem device. The most solid recommendation I have gotten is go with Verizon, expect nothing but horrible customer service, get whatever phone is free, and add the PCMCIA data card onto the order and get the unlimited data plan.

Is using a cell phone to get onto not just the Internet but into corporate mildly impossible, or so few people actually do this?

I have no preference for or against PPC, Smartphone, flip, brick, bag phone or hard antenna walkie-talkie style. I just need to get to the Internet and back into Corpnet and have it go ring when someone needs me. While cool, its not on my very short requirements list for things such as wireless, watching the traffic while driving and the latest Bluetooth headset. I just need a “fone” and something to help me get onto the Internet and work. Anyone have a better or more detailed recommendation then send Verizon a blank check and take whatever they send me?
