MP3 Download service review

Score out of 5

iTunes 3 - search engine limitations, forced QuickTime crap, setup overkill on emails, feature to flag music or artist only works if you enable the spam and junk email. Had everything MSN had and more. Interface to report unknown sounds requires going out to a support browser window. Just to give you an example of the sucky search features - no memory to the list; click on purchased songs, search for a new song and it filters your purchased songs, go DOH! I wanted to buy a nother song, go figure I would be at an online service wanting to buy music. So click the Music store tab, and the search window clears out, and you have to retype the information again, then hit enter to search again.

Napster 1 - so many songs where not there, artists limited, and rather then alternatives you get an annoying “Check back later we may be expanding our library”. If I wanted to check back later, I would not have been looking to download that exact artists/title right now. Search before installing the client is vague and misleading - put a plaid jacket on the Napster logo for this cheesy stunt. Search on Creed and get back Creed, Creed, Creed, and more - Before you sign up for the service, but no songs or albums or indications what this means. They after client download and signup for trial of service, you see it was really Mary Creed and her 4 crappy songs you did not want when Napster was free pirate downloads. From its starts to pirate everything, to its current condition, it was better off dead. Actual library to purchase and download is the worst of the pack.

MSN Music Store 3 - Don’t show me stuff then tell me you dont have it for download. While this shows a great matching of CDDB and lets me know I have the right song/artist, its frustrating to get a YEAH followed by a AUUGHH repeatedly. Did not have anything no listed on iTunes, and since I only wanted to burn a physical CD, any comments on the player limitations are secondhand. A request to add this song for download would have been great right next to the CDDB listings, instead of the tags. Maybe if someone actually wants to make money providing this service, they would step it up a notch.

Real 2 - Limited library, no search before you sign up options, clunky search interface. The look and feel and overall experience was just cheesy.

Amazon.com 1 - is this a future service, because it isnt here now. So much can be found to purchase new and used on Amazon.com that their download offerings look awful compared to Amazon.com itself. If they are not going to do it right, don’t bother.

Star ratings based on having entire list of 20 songs, 15 from a list my family made for Christening party music, and 5 I came up with while just searching for this music with their misspelled names of artists and songs, and the alternatives given by the search programs. Sadly, no one service offered every song, and their alternatives where so wide sweeping as to be worthless. Its either they have it exactly, or dont bother scanning the lists.
