Had to go to court yesterday. A lawyer I hired to do some work decided to pad his bill, mis bill, and do a few things he was not authoirzed to do. Our retainer agreement included an initial retainer amount and limits on work and total costs. He exceeded the total costs and also failed to bill as spelled out in the agreement. So he sued for his unpaid bills and interest on $4700 of work, $1000 in fees to go to court and the $200 to file and server. $5900 not a small chunk of change. What he walked away with was $500 net. All I can say is haha. He was so unprepared, did nto have any of his facts straight, and the only reason I settled was to avoid the costs to come back to court in 2 1/2 months for a trial. Sad part is, it cost him more to get to court, sit for the 2 hours and go back to the office, plus the filing fees, then what he settled for. He really got nothing. Its funnier because he is also a mediator at the court. I am sure the other mediators got a smirk out of seeing this season lawyer get his ass handed to him :)
